A Founder Reply Checklist for Reddit
A practical preflight for answering a Reddit question as a founder: fit, disclosure, useful detail, and knowing when not to post.
Finding a relevant Reddit question is the easy part. Writing a reply that helps without turning the thread into an ad takes more judgment.
First, decide whether you belong in the thread
Read the post and its replies. What is the person actually asking? Are they seeking a recommendation, help with a specific setup, or just space to vent? Check the community's rules and the thread's tone before composing anything.
If you cannot contribute a concrete answer without mentioning your product, skip the reply. An alert is a prompt to inspect a conversation, not permission to enter it.
Lead with the answer
Give the useful part first. For a question about evaluating tools, that could be a short list of criteria, a failure mode to test, or a migration question to ask vendors. For a technical question, it might be the exact step you would try next and why.
Write a reply that would still help if you removed your company name. This is a good edit test, not a claim about Reddit's ranking system.
Disclose your connection plainly
If your product is relevant and the rules allow a mention, say that you built it or work on it. Do not pose as a neutral customer. Explain the limitation as well as the fit. For example: "I build a tool in this category. It could help if you need X, but it would not solve Y."
Reddit's sitewide rules prohibit spam. Community-specific rules may be narrower, so check both.
Do not force a link
Many useful replies need no link. If a source or documentation page would genuinely answer the question, link to that specific page, not a generic signup screen. If the community bans promotional links, respect that boundary.
Also avoid pasting the same answer across threads. Two posts may contain the same keyword but ask different questions.
Run a 30-second preflight
- Did I answer the question that was actually asked?
- Would this be useful without my product mention?
- Have I disclosed my connection?
- Am I making a claim I can support?
- Do this community's rules allow the reply and any link?
If any answer is no, revise or do not post. A missed lead is cheaper than a reply that makes the community less willing to hear from founders.
