Why Can a High-Scoring Reddit Thread Be Impossible to Reply To?

RedditScanner ranks discussion signals, not permission to participate. Check a thread's current lock state and community rules before treating its score as an invitation.

A high RedditScanner opportunity score means the post matched several discovery signals. It does not mean you can still comment there. Open the original thread and check its current state before spending time on a reply.

I inspected the scoring function and thread-analysis route on October 25, 2026. This is a code-based explanation, not a claim that a particular live Reddit post is locked or that the scanner has measured reply success. RedditScanner accounts are currently closed.

A score measures attention, not replyability

The scorer adds points for a recent post, a certain range of comment counts and upvotes, community size, question-like words in the title, and the monitored keyword in the title or body. It does not check whether the Reddit post is locked. The MCP thread-analysis method calls the same scorer, so its "Strong opportunity" assessment also does not certify that a reply can be submitted.

That difference is visible in the code: a post with five to fifty comments gets the maximum comment-count component even if a moderator later locks the discussion. The score describes features of a retrieved post at scan time, not a permission check at reply time. A high number is a reason to inspect, not a reason to draft a pitch.

Reddit's moderator help on locking posts says a lock prevents new comments from ordinary community members, while moderators and administrators can still comment. This is a separate platform state that the scanner's score never reads. Do not infer from an old result that a thread remains open now.

Do a live preflight in the original thread

Open the Reddit URL, not just a saved opportunity card. Check whether you can still comment, read the latest replies, and open the community's current rules. If the thread is locked, stop: neither a higher score nor a different keyword can make a reply possible. If it is open but the question has already been answered, ask whether your answer adds a specific fact the discussion lacks.

Keep two fields in your review notes: discovery score at scan time and current participation decision. For example, "score 72, locked when reviewed" is not a failed score calculation; it is a useful discovery followed by a closed participation window. The number is illustrative, not a captured RedditScanner result. Note the review time because moderation state can change after the scan.

Reddit's sitewide rules also defer to individual community rules. An open comment box does not mean a vendor reply is welcome. When a relevant thread is closed to participation, you can still learn from the question and its existing answers without trying to route around the restriction.
